The View Denounces Trump’s ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ Moment While Americans Are Hurting Most

The View denounced President Donald Trump’s plans to tear down the East Wing of the White House on Thursday so he can build a $250 million ballroom at a time when many Americans are just trying to feed their families.

“I don’t really care about the ballroom per se,” began Alyssa Farah Griffin.  “I care about two things: The American people are struggling. The economy is not rip-roaring the way we were promised it was going to. I think of all my relatives who voted for Trump, who really thought, ‘This guy’s going to bring the country back, make my paycheck go further.’ That’s not what we’re seeing.”

Griffin continued:

Unemployment is too high. Fewer jobs available. You’ve seen American manufacturers have their worst quarter in years, which we were promised he was going to bring back American manufacturing. This juxtaposition if he’s building his grand ballroom while everyone is hurting bothers me. I appreciate it’s not being paid for by taxpayer dollars. I don’t want the biggest corporations in America feeling like they own a piece of the white house. Like they can cut a fat check and feel entitled to whatever may be on policy. It’s not unprecedented, but I don’t like it. I don’t think it’s seemly.

Sara Haines said, “You’ve got people lining up at food banks to feed their family who are still called to show up at work, some of them. This is a disturbing optical problem that really is, it should be an embarrassment right now.”

“Why do the words ‘French Revolution’ keep coming into my head? ‘Let them eat cake,’” Joy Behar added.

“What’s also really bothering me this morning, I was on my way out and they were talking about the fact that beef is so high,” Whoopi Goldberg said. “They’re talking about getting the beef from Argentina. I’m thinking, ‘But wait! What about the farmers who are here?’ You bitch that things aren’t made in America and now —

“You got elected on America First, and that’s not what’s happening,” Haines interjected.

“No it’s not, and the American people certainly haven’t been first in any of this,” Goldberg said.
