European television and festivals feel like they’re light years ahead of us, compared to the multiple European countries (Germany, France, and The Netherlands come to mind in particular) that broadcast, stream, and showcase all their festivals, and cultures, have to offer. Sometimes there are bits that don’t make it to broadcast, or are only shown once and never again, and the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands decided that shouldn’t be the case, so they’re leading an initiative of their own.
Known as the Pinkpop Archives, Pinkpop has gradually been releasing footage that has been collected over time of performances at their festival to their YouTube channel. Videos of Deftones, Sepultura, and Korn have resurfaced throughout the summer, and while Mastodon‘s 2012 performance was posted last month, Pinkpop has also just released the band’s 2014 performance at the festival.
Recorded in 2014 on June 9th, Mastodon‘s set contained 12 different tracks, with one of them not shown in the footage, but you can find the entire tracklist below. Featuring Brent Hinds on guitar and vocals, Troy Sanders on bass – with some vocal responsibilities here and there, Bill Kelliher on guitar, and Brann Dailor on the drums, the four-piece rattled through their set like it was nothing, in the best kind of way.
Vocalist and lead guitarist Brent Hinds left Mastodon earlier this year, before tragically passing away in a car accident on August 20th. Hinds had been with the band for 25 years, and while Dailor tried to attribute the split as similar to that of a married couple, there were some unfortunate shots traded back and forth after the split. Despite never making public amends, according to a source, all of the original Mastodon members attended Hinds‘ celebration of life earlier this month.
