Matt Berninger Unveils New Cover of New Order’s “Blue Monday”

This summer, The National’s Matt Berninger regularly performed a cover of New Order’s 1983 classic, “Blue Monday,” throughout his solo tour of the UK and Europe. Now, the song is officially on streaming as an Amazon Music Unlimited exclusive. Check it out below.

While Berninger’s rendition of “Blue Monday” leans less on synths and more on electric guitar than the original, it’s nevertheless a surprisingly dynamic and enthralling cover. This studio version was recorded at Los Angeles’ Knobworld with production from Sean O’Brien, who also helmed the boards on Berninger’s most recent album, Get Sunk.

Several other personnel who contributed to Get Sunk played on the “Blue Monday” cover, including O’Brien (electric guitars), Garret Lang (bass), Julia Laws (synthesizer, background vocals), and Sterling Laws (drums, drum programming, percussion).
