My younger sister Aimé and I haven’t lived together for close to a decade, and in that time we’ve come to understand and appreciate the separate ways in which we live as adults. She might not steal my clothes anymore (and I her purses), but we continue to steal each other’s home and lifestyle tips.
Because Aimé lives alone, her methods and perspectives on everyday life don’t require much sharing (whereas my husband and I have gotten used to sharing just about every square foot of our apartment). A few years ago during a visit to Aimé’s place, I decided to raid her fridge for a snack (I guess this also counts as a form of sister theft).
I noticed that her butter compartment on the fridge door was filled with skincare items — sheet masks, eye cream, face mist spray, and even a face roller. I was curious about this, so I asked her if she ran out of space in her bathroom medicine cabinet. She let me know that her friend, who is a facialist, recommended this storage hack for certain skincare products. Immediately I was “de-influenced” from buying a skincare mini fridge, which were all the rage at the time, and decided to rearrange my own fridge.
Despite sharing plenty of areas around our home, the fridge isn’t exactly my domain. My husband does all the cooking, so he organizes the fridge in whatever way is most convenient to him. I let him know I’d be making an executive decision with our butter compartment, and thankfully he didn’t mind (since then, our butter has stayed in the cheese drawer).
This was even more helpful to me, as our previous apartment had a tiny bathroom with next to zero storage space for all my skincare items. In my current apartment (and in my own bathroom) I am able to free up counter space for other products that need to stay room temperature, while my sheet masks, under-eye patches, pimple patches, a face roller, and a handful of skincare sample packets live in my refrigerator’s butter compartment.
