Design updates bring it closer to XC90, ES90 flagships

The visual updates on the new S90 brings it in line with the latest XC90 flagship SUV. It gets a revised headlamp with the signature ‘Thor’s hammer’ LED daytime running lamp signature extended to meet the grille. The grille gets new diagonal slats, while the bumper also looks sharper thanks to new air curtains at the edges with a silver garnish. There aren’t any significant changes in profile, save for a new design for the alloy wheels.

At the rear, the C-shaped tail-lamps have been swapped out with new T-shaped tail-lamps with a similar LED detailing. The number plate housing has moved up to the boot lid instead of on the bumper. The design updates also bring it in line with the new all-electric ES90.

Larger and improved touchscreen

The changes are more subtle on the inside, and prominent among them is a new floating 11.2-inch touchscreen – up from the previous 9.0-inch display. The system has a new software that improves responsiveness and can now be updated over the air. The cabin also gets additional sound insulation to boost interior refinement.

Slightly improved electric range for PHEV variant

Volvo hasn’t revealed the exact technical specifications yet but said that the updated S90 will be available with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The brand claims that the plug-in hybrid’s all-electric range has improved slightly from 74km to 80km. Adaptive suspension has been standardised across the range.

The updated S90 will first go on sale in China sometime in the middle of this year, followed by other markets. In India, the S90 was discontinued a couple of years ago due to poor sales, although it remains to be seen if and when this updated model is offered here. The S60, meanwhile, is Volvo’s only sedan currently on sale in India.
